Overview
The step up from L1: a bigger motor, longer airframe, written exam, and a certification flight using at least one J, K, or L motor. NAR does not require dual deployment for Level 2, but I chose it for this rocket so I can test redundant altimeters and separate drogue and main-parachute events.
The problem
Scale the L1 approach to a significantly more powerful vehicle without losing the attention to process that made L1 work.
Constraints
- NAR Level 2 certification requirements
- Increased structural loads from a higher-impulse motor
- Dual-deployment recovery with redundant altimeters
- Field assembly needs to stay manageable without special tooling
Design decisions
- Dual altimeter bay with independent battery and arming systems
- All-fiberglass airframe for structural margin beyond minimum requirements
- Extended avionics section to fit the redundancy without moving the CG
