Overview
The step up from L1. Bigger motor, longer airframe, more complex recovery, and the same care applied to a harder set of problems. Just started the build. L2 adds a written exam, a J/K/L motor, and mandatory dual-deployment recovery with altimeter-triggered ejection charges.
The problem
Scale the L1 approach to a significantly more powerful vehicle without losing the attention to process that made L1 work.
Constraints
- NAR Level 2 certification requirements
- Increased structural loads from a higher-impulse motor
- Dual-deployment recovery with redundant altimeters
- Field assembly needs to stay manageable without special tooling
Design decisions
- Dual altimeter bay with independent battery and arming systems
- All-fiberglass airframe for structural margin beyond minimum requirements
- Extended avionics section to fit the redundancy without moving the CG
Build process
- 01
Written exam study underway, required before the certification flight
- 02
Airframe build started
- 03
Avionics bay planned for dual altimeter with independent battery and arming. Same serviceability standard as L1.
Result
Early build phase. Target: L2 certification flight.
